Debate: Replace a whole LRU vs. crack it open and component-level repair...
Got a Collins radio that keeps dropping the tx side. Shop foreman says swap the whole unit, $3,200 plus labor. I want to pull the board, find the bad cap or resistor, and fix it for maybe $20 in parts. Took an avionics bench class 2 years ago that said component repair is fine if you can trace the schematic. But the foreman says we don't have the time and the warranty from a new unit is worth the cost. What do you guys do on something like this... has anyone pushed back and won the argument?

One good cap job costs you $20 but three hours of billing you can't get back.

Makes a lot of sense actually, never thought of it that way before.
