Oh man... that's rough. I always wonder who marks those shortcuts and if they even walked the whole thing. The real kicker is how a digital trail map can make you ignore your own gut feeling when the path looks wrong... you keep thinking the app must be right. Ruined boots are the worst kind of souvenir.

My cousin's a park ranger in Colorado and says the worst marked trails are often from volunteer groups trying to help before the season starts. They'll flag a line that looks good on a map but turns into a swamp by July.
