Debate: do you fix the old shutter or replace the whole assembly?

I was talking to a guy at a camera shop in Austin last week (real old-school repairer, been doing it 40 years) and he said he never replaces whole shutter assemblies because there's too much calibration variance between units. but then I see people online saying the opposite, that it's faster and more reliable to just swap the whole thing. I've got a Nikon FM2 on my bench right now with a sticky shutter and I'm torn on which way to go. what's the general consensus here?

That old timer in Austin probably knows his stuff though... you can't beat 40 years of experience. I fixed a sticky shutter on my old Pentax once and it was a nightmare getting the speeds right again after. If your FM2 is otherwise in good shape I'd lean toward fixing the original, it's already matched to those gears and everything.
