Shoutout to the guy who swore by a $15 ultrasonic cleaner from Harbor Freight
I figured it was junk for shutter assemblies, but after cleaning a sticky Minolta X-700 mechanism in under ten minutes, I'm a convert. Has anyone else found a cheap tool that actually works for precision jobs?

My buddy ruined a Contax G2 shutter with one of those cheap ultrasonic cleaners last year. The vibration was way too strong for the delicate leaf mechanism and actually cracked a blade. For old camera grease, I've had way better luck with a small jar of naphtha and a soft artist's brush. It lets you control the cleaning exactly where you need it without risking damage from cavitation.

Sounds like a freak accident more than a real warning...

Yeah, that Harbor Freight cleaner is shockingly good. I use a drop of simple green in distilled water for most camera parts, gets the old grease out without being too harsh. Just make sure you dry everything really well after.
