I used to think solar panels were just for rich people until I saw my neighbor's electric bill drop to $12

For years I figured solar was one of those things only people with extra cash could afford, you know like a Tesla or a pool. But last month my neighbor across the street got a system installed on his 1970s ranch house and he showed me his bill from August. He said it went from $210 a month down to just $12 after net metering kicked in. That got me looking into the federal tax credit which covers 30% of the cost and then my state has a rebate too. I called three installers and found out the average system around here runs about $15,000 before credits but after everything it's more like $9,000. I actually sat down with my own electric bills from the past 3 years and realized I'm spending almost $2,400 a year on power. That means the panels would pay for themselves in less than 4 years and after that I'm basically getting free electricity. Has anyone else here done the math on their own place and found it made more sense than they thought?

Appreciate you sharing this man. I went through the same thing last year when I finally ran the numbers on my own house and realized I was basically lighting money on fire every month. It is wild how the math changes once you actually sit down and look at it instead of just assuming solar is not for you.
