Back when I started, we used to set tool offsets by feel and a piece of paper

I'd jog the tool down until it just scratched a sheet of paper on the vise jaw, then write that number down and do the math. That was the way in our shop in Dayton for years. We switched to using a proper tool setter about five years ago after a new hire showed us how much faster it was. Now I just tap the probe and the machine does it all, which saves maybe 15 minutes on every setup. Anyone else remember doing it the old way, or did you all have fancy probes from the start?

Wait, you guys were still doing that in Dayton just five years ago? That's wild.

Seriously, what else were we supposed to do? That little folded paper corner was the official tech support for every kid in my class. It feels weird knowing some places just stopped using it. Guess we were all just late to the party.

That paper trick was the only way I knew for ages too!
