Older cosmetologist told me I was cutting my perm rods wrong and she was right

I've been doing perms for about 3 years now and thought I had it down. But last month this older stylist named Carol who's been in the game since the 80s watched me wrap a spiral perm and stopped me. She said I was wrapping the hair too tight around the rods, especially at the ends. I was basically pulling the hair straight as I wrapped it. She showed me to leave a tiny bit of slack and let the rod do the work. Tried it on my next client and the curl pattern came out way softer and more natural. Anyone else pick up simple old school tips that nobody teaches in school anymore?

Carol's been doing it since the perm was invented.

My aunt told me the same thing about rods back in 2005 when I first started learning perms. She said the tight pulling at the ends causes that frizzy look instead of a clean curl. It's one of those little details that makes a huge difference in the final result but nobody mentions in textbooks or online tutorials.
