Hit 50 suspicious login attempts in one day last week - here's what I learned

I got an alert from my bank about a login from a city I've never even visited. That got me checking the security logs on my email account, and I was shocked to see 52 blocked login attempts in just a single Tuesday. Turns out most of them came from IP addresses in Russia and China, and they were trying old passwords from data breaches. I enabled two-factor authentication on every account that would let me, which took about an hour but felt worth it. Has anyone else seen a spike like that out of nowhere?

Yeah, but did you check if any of those old passwords were still in use? I found out the hard way that I was still using a password from 2015 on one site. Dumb mistake. The spike is real though, happens to everyone eventually. Those bots just scan for any weak spot in your security. You should also check haveibeenpwned just to see what else is out there.

Puts into perspective how we're all just constantly getting prodded by bots and scanners every day. It's like leaving your car unlocked in a bad part of town and being surprised someone tries the handle.
