Old timer watched me set valve lash cold and asked one question that fixed my whole routine
Been turning wrenches for 6 years now and I always set valve lash on a cold engine because thats how I was taught out of school. Had a guy named Ray who has been at the shop in Tulsa for like 30 years watching me do the overhead on a N14 last month. He didnt say anything the whole time, just stood there with his coffee. When I finished he asked me if I ever checked the spec sheet for hot vs cold settings and I kind of brushed him off saying cold is cold. He goes, son these liners grow almost 8 thousandths when they hit temp, you set them cold at the tight end and theyre gonna clack when shes hot. I looked it up that night and sure enough Cummins wants .011 cold intake and .023 exhaust but a lot of guys run them a hair looser cold to account for growth. Started setting mine 2 thousandths loose on the cold side and the top end noise on that truck went away completely. Ray retired in March but I still text him when I get a weird one. Any of you guys run hot lash or is cold the standard everywhere now?
