Picked the cheap wheelchair cushion over the custom foam one, big mistake
Last month I had to choose between a $40 gel cushion from a big box store and a custom foam option from a local shop for $180. I went with the cheap one because money's tight, figuring it's just a cushion. After 2 weeks I'm getting pressure spots and my tailbone hurts all day. Has anyone else tried the cheaper route and regretted it, or found a decent budget option that actually works?

Did the cheap cushion seem okay at first before it started messing you up? That's the thing with those gel pads - they feel fine for a day or two but the gel shifts around and gets thin in the middle real quick. My friend used one from Walmart for about three weeks and ended up with a pressure sore on her coccyx that took months to heal. The custom foam might hurt upfront but at least it's consistent and keeps your weight distributed even after hours of sitting. Plus the cheap ones tend to flatten out faster if you're on the heavier side, which just makes the pressure worse over time.

Honestly I think most people overlook how much your posture changes when you sit on a cheap cushion for hours. I had a friend who used a basic gel pad from Target and after a month her hips were totally lopsided because the cushion compressed unevenly and threw off her alignment. That $40 fixed her pain short term but caused way worse problems down the road. Sometimes the custom foam is worth it just for the stability and knowing your spine isn't getting twisted.
