Shoutout to the person who told me my wheelchair ramp idea was dangerous
I was planning a wooden ramp for my front porch with a 1:8 slope because I thought steeper was fine for a shorter distance. A neighbor who uses a chair politely pointed out that 1:12 is the ADA standard for a reason, and 1:8 would have been a struggle to roll up alone. I checked with a local accessibility contractor in Austin, and they said steep ramps cause accidents and wear out chair parts faster. I redid the design with a switchback and it cost about $200 more but now I can actually use it without help. Why do so many DIY guides skip over the real world physics of rolling a chair uphill?
