I finally stopped using my orbital sander on drywall joints after a pro framer told me I was just making more dust and no progress.
He saw me at the hardware store grabbing more sandpaper and said flat out 'that thing is for wood, not mud,' and now I just use a hand pole sander for half the cleanup and way better results anyone else ditch a power tool for the simple version?

Oh man, I learned that one the hard way too. Took me three rooms of caked up sandpaper and dust clouds before a drywall guy pointed out the same thing to me. Now I just use a 120 grit screen on a pole sander for the finish coat and it's night and day - way less dust and you can actually feel when the mud is smooth instead of just vibrating it into a mess. A little trick I picked up is to keep the screen moving in a circular pattern and barely press down, let the weight of the pole do the work. Your mileage may vary but I haven't touched an orbital on drywall since.

You're just saying that because you've never used a 80 grit on a variable speed orbital.
