Shelled out $150 for a floor leveler kit that made things worse

I bought that self-leveling compound and a spreader thinking it would fix my crooked living room floor, but I ended up with a bumpier mess than before and had to rent a grinder for another $80. Has anyone else had a leveling project backfire like this, or did I just pick the wrong brand?

Honestly, aren't floor levelers supposed to be pretty foolproof if you just follow the directions?

Oh man, I once used a self-leveling compound and my bathroom floor ended up looking like a funhouse mirror.
