Update: Guy at the hardware store was right about pre-drilling
My neighbor Mike told me to always pre-drill holes for deck screws. I thought it was a waste of time. After splitting two boards on my patio build, I tried his way. No more splits. Saved me $30 in replacement wood.

Oh my goodness, I learned that trick the hard way after splitting a brand new piece of oak trim in half.
