Old timer on the Mississippi showed me a trick I still use
Guy working a cutterhead dredge near Baton Rouge told me to always check the slurry density by feel before touching any gauges. He grabbed a handful right off the discharge pipe and said "that tells you more than any screen." Has anyone else picked up a weird habit like that from a veteran operator?

Stopped reading for a second when I got to "warm mud shower" and just winced. Can't imagine trying to explain to the foreman why you're completely covered in slurry on a Tuesday morning. Props to you for turning it into a learning moment, even if the lesson was about personal space.

My attempt at that trick resulted in me wearing about half the slurry sample after I grabbed too aggressively. Still not sure if the old-timer was teaching me about density or testing if I had the reflexes to dodge a warm mud shower. Either way I learned to check gauges from a safe distance now.
