Basement reno quote came in 40% higher than the written estimate after we signed
Signed a deal in June with a Calgary outfit, guy named Derek, wrote up a clean breakdown for a 900 sq ft basement finish. Two weeks into demo, his foreman hits me with a change order for extra electrical and "unforeseen" plumbing that somehow doubled the line items. I stopped the crew, brought my own electrician in for a $350 second opinion, and turns out the panel was fine, they just wanted to pad the hours. Had to threaten a lien lawyer call before Derek agreed to stick to the original number, but only after we lost 6 days of schedule. Anyone else had a contractor try to sneak scope creep after the ink dried, and how did you shut it down without burning the whole job?

Derek sounds like every contractor I've ever hired, they all turn into magicians once the pen hits the paper. I once had a guy quote me 12 grand for a deck and then "discover" the ground was too soft, wanted 4 grand extra to pour footings. My marriage survived that one, barely.
