Quoted a small garage slab job in Red Deer low just to get my foot in the door, wound up $900 ahead
Honestly I almost didn't even bid this one. A guy in Red Deer needed a 20x24 detached garage pad poured and every quote he'd gotten was sitting around $6,500, so I threw in $5,800 figuring I'd eat a bit of margin just to get a stamped concrete job on my portfolio. Tbh I was nervous the whole time because my form guy bailed two days before the pour and I ended up doing the layout myself with a laser level I barely knew how to use. Ngl the first screed pass looked rough and I thought I'd blown it, but the concrete settled way flatter than I expected and the finish came out clean. What really got me was the prep, I spent an extra half day on compaction and gravel because I had the time, and the homeowner noticed and tipped my crew $200 cash. Then he referred me to his brother in Blackfalds for a bigger driveway job worth $11k, so that lowball bid turned into my best week since spring. Lesson I'm taking from it is that doing the boring prep work right gets you paid in ways you can't put on the invoice. Any of you ever bid low on purpose and have it actually work out, or does it usually just bite you later?
