Am I the only one who thinks the new sealed compressor units are a step backward for us?
I was at a parts counter in Denver last Tuesday and overheard a guy say he has been swapping sealed compressors on fridges for 18 years and now he just tells customers to buy new. I get it, but that bugged me. We replaced a sealed unit on a 2019 Whirlpool last month and the part alone was $410, plus 3 hours of labor because everything is buried behind plastic. The old rebuildable ones you could service in half the time. Are we just becoming parts swappers who don't fix anything anymore? Or is that the only way to stay in business now?
Is it bad that I laughed when you said the part was $410? Because that's the same price as a whole used fridge on Facebook Marketplace! We had a 2020 Kenmore where the sealed unit was back ordered six weeks, so the guy just bought a new one and used the old one as a garage beer fridge. And don't get me started on three hours of labor just to dig through foam and clips like we're on some kind of treasure hunt. At this point half of us are repair techs and half of us are just really expensive guessers.
