A climber in Bend told me my back cut was too high and honestly it stung
I have been felling hazard trees for 12 years and always cut my hinge at about 80 percent of the diameter, but a climber I was working with in Bend told me it was a crutch and said 'you are leaving yourself no room to steer.' I switched to a thinner hinge on a leaning Doug fir and the tree went exactly where I wanted for the first time in months, though it felt wrong the whole way. Is a thick hinge really safer for a beginner or does it just teach bad habits?
