Appreciation post: tried pruning sealant on a red oak last spring, and the callus growth surprised me
Honestly I stopped using wound dressing on pruning cuts like 8 years ago because every old timer I know says it traps moisture and causes rot. But last March I had a red oak in Fairmount Park with a big limb tear from a storm, and the park supervisor asked me to put something on it since people kept freaking out about the exposed wood. So I grabbed a can of the cheap asphalt stuff from the hardware store just to make him happy. Went back 6 months later to check it and the callus tissue had rolled over the edge way cleaner than the untreated cuts on the same tree. I know that sounds crazy and it's probably just this one tree, but now I'm second guessing everything I was taught. The wound was maybe 5 inches across and the tree pushed new wood around it by fall. Has anyone else seen sealant actually help on big storm tears, or is this just a fluke with this one oak?
