That 2 inch pottery shard in my garden turned out to be 1800 years old
I was digging a hole for a fence post near my place outside of Baton Rouge and hit something hard. Pulled up this small piece of terracotta looking pottery, maybe 2 inches across. Thought it was a old flower pot. Tossed it in a bucket and forgot about it. Three months later I brought it to a geology talk at the library on a whim. The guy running it got excited and said it matched a local Native American style from around 200 AD. Now I'm wondering how many other shards I've just plowed over or thrown out while setting posts. Has anyone else found something that looked like junk but turned out to be old? How do you know when to get it checked vs just leaving it alone?
