The Roman road layers under my town's old courthouse changed how I dig

I was at the county courthouse expansion in Harrisburg last spring when they broke ground for a new parking lot. They hit a section of cobblestone that turned out to be a 1920s street, and under that was a layer of packed gravel from the 1850s. It hit me that every generation just paved over the last one, no one ever fully removes the old surface. Now when I'm on a dig, I stop treating the top layer as trash and start reading it as a timeline instead. That one afternoon made me redo my field notes system for the last 6 months of projects. Has anyone else had a construction site teach them something that changed their whole approach to a site grid?
