Walking the old canal path in Lowell and spotted a piece of pottery in the mud
I was looking at the bank after the rain last week and saw a curved piece of glazed ceramic sticking out. I left it there but took a picture, and it looks like a thick plate rim from maybe the 1800s. Has anyone else found stuff along that stretch?

Finding old bits of things like that always makes me wonder about the hands that held them... a plate from a worker's lunch by the canal, maybe. It's weird how the ground just gives up these little pieces of time after a hard rain. I find rusty bottle caps in my own garden every spring. Makes you realize how much ordinary life is just buried under the surface.

Totally get what you mean about the ground giving things up after rain. I found a whole old ink bottle like that behind my shed last spring, just sitting there in the dirt. It's crazy to hold something that someone just tossed aside a hundred years ago. Makes you feel like you're touching a little piece of a story that got lost. What do you figure the plate pattern looked like?
