Overheard a guy say he asks 'why' three times before buying anything, tried it on a $40 blender

He said if the answer doesn't hold up after the third why, you don't actually need it, and that test killed my impulse purchase in about 20 seconds, has anyone else tried a mental filter like that and had it backfire on something clearly worth buying?
