That guy at the telescope meetup corrected my photo and he was right

Last weekend I brought my stacked moon shots to the Riverside public observatory meetup, feeling pretty good about the detail. This older dude walks up, looks at my laptop screen for like 5 seconds, and says, "Your alignment is off by about 3 pixels, that's why the edges look fuzzy." At first I wanted to brush him off, but he pulled up my raw files on his own drive and pointed out the exact crater rim where the stack was ghosting. He'd spent 20 years doing astrophotography with a $200 setup, not some fancy rig, and his own images were insanely sharp. So we spent the next 45 minutes re-doing the alignment in free software, and the result genuinely blew me away. It made me wonder how many good photos I've tossed because I blamed the gear when it was really my processing. Has anyone else had a random stranger at a meetup instantly spot a flaw you'd been ignoring for months?

Riverside observatory is a good spot, but I've had the opposite experience there. A guy once told me my Saturn stack was overprocessed and "looked like a cartoon", so I spent thirty minutes dialing it back, only to realize my original version was actually sharper when I got home and compared them side by side. Sometimes the old timers have a point, sure, but they also get comfortable with one workflow and treat it like gospel. If your moon shot was already looking decent to you, maybe the real issue wasnt the alignment but that you were chasing someone else's definition of "sharp". That said, three pixels is three pixels, so I'd probably have listened too, just not as fast.
