Three years of stacking, nobody told me about flats

I've been shooting planets and deep sky from my backyard in Austin since 2021, and every image came out with a weird gradient I blamed on light pollution. A guy at the Dark Sky fest looked at my M42 shot and asked if I'd ever taken calibration frames, that's when it hit me. Anyone else waste years skipping dark and flat frames before realizing they make or break the final stack?
