Hot take: driving my own car from Dallas to Phoenix beat paying a broker for the same trip
Moved from Dallas to Phoenix about 3 years ago and I had two options for the car: hire a broker to put it on a truck, or load it up and drive it myself. The broker quotes came in around $850 to $1,100 and every one of them said pickup could take up to a week, so my car would sit in a lot in Dallas waiting for a full truck going west. I ended up driving it, 1,065 miles over two days with a stop in El Paso, and it cost me about $160 in fuel plus one night at a cheap motel. What really sold me was the insurance part. With the broker, my stuff would sit in someone else's care and I had to trust the fine print on their coverage. In my own car, nothing got moved or scratched and I knew exactly where it was every hour. I get why people ship a car when they're moving far or the car isn't worth the miles, but for a trip that fits in two driving days I'd take the wheel again. Has anyone compared a broker quote to driving their own car and gone with the truck anyway?
