I was grabbing coffee near the hangar at Love Field last week and overheard a grey beard talking to a kid fresh out of school. The guy said he doesn't close out a squawk until he can walk a brand new tech through the whole thing out loud, no notes. Said if he stumbles on any step, that means he doesn't actually understand what he did. Been doing this 11 years and I never thought about it that way. I usually just check my torque, snap the panels, finish the paperwork and move on. Now I'm wondering how many times I've signed something off without really being able to break it down for somebody else. Do any of you all do something like this to double check yourself before you write it up? Or am I over thinking it and this is just how the old school guys talk?
