I finally bailed on the Timberline Trail at mile 19 and I still can't decide if I did the right thing
Two weeks ago I was three days into the Timberline Trail around Mt Hood and my right knee just gave out on the descent into Zigzag Canyon. I had trained for this loop for four months, had my resupply all mapped out, and then I'm sitting on a rock at mile 19 trying to figure out if I can even make it back up the other side. I ended up turning around and hiking out the way I came, which meant 8 more miles on a knee that was already shot, and honestly it was the smart call but it still stings. Here's where I keep going back and forth: part of me thinks I should have just wrapped it, taken way more breaks, and pushed through to finish the loop like I planned. The other part thinks bailing was the only real choice because a blown knee out there with no cell service is a whole different kind of problem. My buddy keeps telling me I made the right call but he wasn't the one eating the permit fee and rebooking a shuttle. Has anyone else cut a thru hike short when your body quit on you, and did you regret it later or was it the obvious move looking back?
