Paid $40 for a fancy ant moat, a bottle cap works better
Picked up one of those copper ant moats at the garden supply store last month. Looked great, hung it off the shepherd's hook, and the hummers still ignored the feeder. Turns out the moat was too shallow and the ants just walked right over the rim. Wasted $40. Then I grabbed a plastic bottle cap from a soda bottle, flipped it upside down, and wedged it over the hook before hanging the feeder. Filled it with water and now the ants can't cross. Has anyone else found a cheap fix that beats the store bought stuff?

No way, a bottle cap? That's genius in the dumbest way possible. My husband would lose it if he saw me do that after he bought a fancy copper moat for our porch last summer. We had the same exact problem, the ants were basically using the moat as a tiny water slide straight to the sugar water. I ended up using a old pickle jar lid, punched a little hole in it with a nail, and it worked way better than the $25 thing he got. It's funny how the simplest junk in your kitchen drawer beats the stuff they sell for birds.
