My grandma's handwritten bread recipe fell apart, now what?

Found my grandma's sourdough recipe on an old index card last week. It was stained and torn, missing half the steps. She never wrote down the starter feeding schedule, just said 'feed it when it looks hungry.' I tried to guess and ended up with a flat, dense loaf. Took me 3 attempts before I gave up and used a generic online recipe. It works fine but it's not hers, you know? Has anyone else lost a family recipe to time and had to recreate it blind?
