My $300 heat treat lesson from a backyard forge experiment
I tried to save money heat treating my own blade blanks in a homemade forge last month, figured I'd watched enough videos. Burned two blanks beyond saving and the third came out soft as butter, that's about $300 in 1095 steel down the drain. Guess I forgot that proper even heating takes way more control than a charcoal pit and a hairdryer blower. The local heat treat shop only charges $25 per blade, so the math was never even close. Anyone else blow up a project trying to DIY something that's better left to the pros?
