My buddy's wall of unplayed expansions made me question our hobby

He showed me his shelf full of game expansions still in plastic. It feels like we're missing the point of playing together. Is this a common thing among board game geeks?

Five expansions for Scythe sit on my shelf, still wrapped. @jenny_sanchez calling it a retirement plan makes sense, but when do we actually retire? We keep buying new stuff instead of learning the games we own. It's like we're paying for memories we never make.

Wow, this hits home! I was just reading a thread about "shelf of shame guilt" and it totally fits. People get so pumped for the Kickstarter or the new shiny box that the buying becomes its own hobby. I've seen folks with every expansion for games like Terraforming Mars but they've only played the base game twice. It feels like we're collecting possibilities instead of making memories.

My own shelf of shame is practically a library at this point. I tell myself I'm supporting creators, but really I'm just very good at buying cardboard and then feeling bad about it. The excitement of opening a new game is its own little event, even if it just goes straight to the pile. I've decided to stop calling it a shelf of shame and start calling it my retirement plan, because apparently I'll play them all when I'm eighty.
