Calf skin grain direction made me redo 14 covers

Got a batch of calf skin last Tuesday from a supplier I hadn't used before. I always thought grain direction mattered for the spine but not much else. Turns out that's totally wrong. The hide had a subtle texture that only showed when light hit it at an angle, and I glued up 14 covers before I noticed the nap was running opposite on half of them. Found this out by doing a quick water test on a scrap piece, where the curl direction tells you the grain run. Had to peel and redo the whole stack, cost me about 6 hours and a lot of cussing. Ever had a hide fool you like that, or do you check before cutting every time?
