My fern corner went tropical in one weekend and I'm blaming the $9 humidifier from the pharmacy in Spokane
Everyone says ferns are fussy divas and need a whole pebble tray setup, but I just stuck a cheap humidifier two feet away and my maidenhair threw out five new fronds in nine days. My calathea stayed mad the whole time, same corner, same water, so go figure. Anyone else have one plant that thrives on what kills its neighbor?

Ferns can be way tougher than people give them credit for, but I don't buy that a $9 pharmacy humidifier is the whole story. Maidenhair ferns usually want light and air moving around them, and if that corner already gets decent indirect sun, the humidifier just tipped things in your favor. Calatheas are a different beast though, they want warmth and steady moisture in the soil, and they hate drying out even for a day. Same corner, same water, but the light and airflow are probably not the same for both pots. I've had a pothos and a spider plant sitting side by side where one loved it and the other sulked for months, so the spot matters as much as the gadget.
