My neighbor in Tulsa told me my feeder was killing birds, so I watched it for 3 days straight
My next door neighbor Ruth stopped me by the fence last Monday and mentioned that window strikes kill almost a billion birds a year in the US, which I shrugged off until I actually sat on my porch for 3 days with coffee and counted 4 stunned finches under my feeder. Turns out my feeder was only 2 feet from the glass, and birds were flinching at reflections of my oak tree. How far do you all keep your feeders from windows, and does anyone have luck with those window decals that are supposed to break up the reflection?
That bit about birds flinching at the oak tree reflection is the part that got me, since I read that it is the reflection of sky and trees that tricks them, not the glass itself. Two feet is way too close, everything I have seen says 10 feet minimum or right up against the pane so they cannot build up speed. My aunt put those dot decals on her slider and the hits dropped off a lot, but you have to cover the whole window with them spaced close or the birds just aim for the gaps.
