That chat with my neighbor about moss lawns completely threw me off
He said he let his whole front yard go moss because it stays green without watering during our 90 degree summers, and now I'm wondering why I spend $60 a month on sprinklers for grass that barely survives.

Wait until you actually spend the time to find out how much moss costs to establish, right? I used to think it was just poor people's landscaping until my neighbor showed me his three year old moss lawn that looks better than my grass ever did. Now I'm seriously considering ripping out my sprinkler system next spring and trying it myself.

@aaronlee I get what you're saying but I got to push back on this moss lawn idea hard. That "stays green without watering" part is true for some moss types in certain climates, but I've watched multiple neighbors try this and fail completely because they didn't realize how picky moss actually is. Moss needs acidic soil, constant shade, and it absolutely hates foot traffic or dogs running across it. Most people end up with a patchy mess of dirt and dead moss after a year because they underestimated how much prep work it takes. Plus if you have oak trees dropping leaves or any thatch from nearby grass blowing in, it'll choke the moss out faster than you can say "low maintenance." I'm not convinced ripping out a perfectly good sprinkler system for something that might work is a smart gamble, but hey, maybe your climate is different from mine.
