Heard a guy at the supply house say you can't lay brick in the rain at all

I think that's way too rigid. I've finished plenty of jobs on schedule by using a good tarp system and adjusting the mortar mix, like adding a bit less water. When's the last time you had to push through some wet weather?

Tell that guy to try building a house in Florida then. Guess we'd only work three months a year.

Ever had to tent a whole chimney in a downpour? A heavy duty tarp and some plastic sheeting go a long way, you just have to watch your mortar and keep everything covered between lays. It's not ideal, but you can definitely make it work.
