Almost threw out $40 worth of chicken that expired yesterday
Checked the sell by date and it said yesterday but it smelled fine and looked okay so I cooked it up with some rice and beans. Turned out perfectly and saved me a grocery run. Anyone else risk it with meat past the date?

Smelled fine and looked okay" - that's basically the meat version of "the check is in the mail," isn't it? I swear half the food I eat is just me playing chicken with my own digestive system (pun intended). The sell by date might as well be a suggestion, especially if you're cooking it right away. I figure if it doesn't smell like a garbage truck and the color hasn't turned into something out of a horror movie, you're probably fine. Good luck explaining that logic to your stomach later though.

Nah man, I gotta push back on this. Sell by dates exist for a reason and ignoring them is playing roulette with your gut. My buddy thought he was clever eating chicken two days past the date, looked fine, smelled okay, and he spent the next 48 hours hugging a toilet. Cooking it right away doesn't kill all the toxins bacteria leave behind, that's the part people forget. The color and smell test only catches the obvious spoilage, not the invisible stuff that'll wreck your insides. Your stomach might be tough but it's not magic.
