Got a free hotel upgrade in Bangkok by pretending it was my birthday.

The front desk guy gave me a suite with a river view after I joked about my 'special day', and I spent the whole week living like a king on a backpacker's budget, so has anyone else pulled a harmless trick like that to score a better room?
