My mortgage broker said I needed $68,000 down and I actually had it, which somehow made me feel worse
I sat down with him last Tuesday expecting to hear I was years away from buying anything in Hamilton. Instead he pulled up the numbers and told me I needed $68,000 for the down payment on a $425,000 townhouse and I had $71,200 sitting in my savings. I should be thrilled but I mostly felt sick, because that money took me six years of not going on trips and driving a 2011 Civic with a busted heater. Then he hit me with the closing costs and land transfer tax and suddenly my little cushion was gone. Six years of saving and the reward is being house poor in a townhouse smaller than my dad's garage. Does the math ever stop feeling like a punch in the gut, or does everyone just get used to it?
