Rant: my chain went from sounding like a coffee grinder to dead quiet in 20 minutes and I'm still kind of mad about it
So my chain has been making this awful grinding noise for about two weeks now, and I just kept riding because I figured it was the rear derailleur or maybe the cassette going bad. Then my buddy Dave takes one look at it in his garage in Hamilton and just laughs at me. He grabs this old rag and a bottle of whatever lube he had kicking around (not even the fancy stuff) and starts wiping the chain down. The rag came off practically black, like I was cleaning a chimney brush or something. Then he re-lubes it, wipes the extra off, and tells me to go ride around the block. Twenty minutes of my life, tops, and the bike sounds brand new. The noise was just years of gunk packed into every single link. I felt like such a fool standing there. What do you folks clean your chains with, because clearly I've been doing it all wrong.
