I finally stopped covering my Classic Mini, dust beats moisture every time

I kept reading posts about how a car cover is the best protection, but after 2 winters in Portland my 1978 Mini had more rust spots than when I parked it uncovered at my buddy's farm. The cover trapped condensation against the paint and the fenders, especially during the freeze thaw cycles we get here. I pulled it off last January, gave the car a wax with Collinite 845, and just let it breathe in the corner of the shed. Am I the only one who thinks a breathable carport or open storage beats a tight cover unless you're in a heated garage?
