Guy at the Tacoma supply yard talked me out of pine for outdoor trim and I owe him lunch
I always figured pine was fine for trim if you painted it good, and that was my hill for years. Then about 6 months ago I was loading up at a yard down in Tacoma and an old guy in a faded union jacket asked what it was for. When I told him it was fascia on a west facing wall, he just shook his head and pointed at his own truck, said he had redone the same job twice on his own house before he switched. I went with his advice and used cedar instead, cost me about $180 more on that job, and the piece I nailed up as a test scrap in my own backyard is still dead straight while the pine sample next to it cupped after one wet winter. Has anyone else had a yard guy save them from themselves like that?
