Pulled 40 year old carpet off a stair tread and the oak under it looked brand new
Helped a buddy rip out the old carpet on his stairs in Dayton last month, and under all that padding the treads were solid white oak. The risers had been painted about 6 coats deep but the treads were barely touched since the 80s. I sanded one down with 80 grit then 150 and it came up warm and tight, not one squeak after. What surprised me was the treads never got any wear protection, so the middle of each step had a dip about 1/8 inch deep. Anyone got a good way to fill those dips without tearing the whole staircase apart?
