Why does nobody talk about how fast rice goes from cheap to sad in a shared fridge
Made a big pot of rice on a Sunday three weeks ago, portioned it into five containers for work lunches, felt really proud of myself for spending like $2.50 total on the whole thing. By Wednesday the rice was dry and crunchy on top and weirdly wet on the bottom, and by Friday it smelled like a gym bag so I tossed two containers straight in the trash. Turns out my roommate keeps the fridge at like 45 degrees and shoves warm leftovers right next to my stuff, which I only figured out after the third batch went bad. I started freezing half the rice the same night I cook it and keeping the rest in the coldest spot on the bottom shelf, and now it actually lasts the full week without turning into paste. Also learned the hard way not to pack it while it is still steaming because that just traps the moisture in. Does anyone else deal with a fridge temp war with their roommates, or is it just me losing money on rice every single week?
Keeping rice in the coldest spot and freezing half right away is smart, but the real win is getting a cheap fridge thermometer so you can actually show your roommate the temp instead of guessing. Cold rice also reheats way better if you sprinkle a little water on it first.
