Tried using a soot eater instead of a traditional brush last month
Everyone online swears by soot eaters for quick cleanings. Figured I'd give one a shot on a customer's setup in Denver. Thing barely touched the glaze and left streaks all down the flue. Had to go back and hand brush the whole thing anyway. Anyone else had this fail on creosote buildup?

Look, I've been painting houses for over 15 years and I swear some of these soot eater reviews are paid shills. I tried one on a chimney flue last winter that had maybe a quarter inch of buildup and it took me three passes to even get half of it off. The thing just kinda smeared the crap around and left these weird shiny streaks. Ended up spending an extra hour with a regular brush anyway. Is it really that much of a time saver or are people just not looking close enough at their work?

Did you try letting the soot eater head soak in water for a bit before using it? I had the exact same issue with streaking on heavy buildup until a buddy told me to wet the head good and use less pressure. That worked way better for me on the tough stuff.
