Was sure the mirror trick for the crown was nonsense until it worked on a 1920s bungalow
An old sweep in Dayton kept telling me to hold a small mirror up the flue to eyeball the crown from below instead of trusting my wrist. Tried it on a job off Salem Ave last month and caught a cracked crown tile the camera had missed twice. Anyone else use this, or do you still run the camera every time?
Learned that mirror trick from a guy who did chimneys for 40 years and he swore by it for spotting gaps the camera glides right past. Same old timer told me to tap the crown with a broom handle and listen for a hollow thud, which sounds like voodoo until you hear a good one next to a bad one. Ended up buying a $6 inspection mirror at the hardware store and it lives in my bag now. Funny how the cheap old school stuff still earns its spot next to the fancy gear.
