A guy at the Chicago bike co-op said e-bikes are worse for the planet, and I finally did the math on my own commute
Six months ago this mechanic at a co-op in Logan Square told me my e-bike was pointless for climate action because of the battery and shipping. I almost sold it right there. Then I actually tracked things: I put 1,850 miles on it since March and skipped about 90 gallons of gas, which is around $340 saved and roughly 1,700 pounds of CO2 not going up. The battery in my bike took about 500 pounds of CO2 to make, so I passed that break-even point sometime in July. Now he wants to argue about grid mix, which is fair, but he never asked where my electricity comes from. For people who ditched a car entirely, does the battery math still bug you, or did you get past it too?
