I thought comic book fans were too intense, but hanging out at a local shop made me appreciate the community.

Totally get that. The vibe inside those shops is way cooler than you'd think. People are actually super helpful when you're trying to find a specific issue or just starting out. Makes the whole hobby way less intimidating.

Hard agree with @blake_martinez18. That helpful vibe is EVERYTHING. Walked into a shop totally lost on some X-Men crossover, and a guy at the register spent ten minutes drawing me a timeline on a sticky note. They remember what you like, too, and will hold stuff for you. Turns a random store into your spot. Makes spending money there feel good.

Forget just being helpful, that personal touch builds a real community. It's the main reason those places survive against big online stores. That guy drawing a timeline is basically doing free, amazing customer service that an algorithm can't copy. They make you feel like a regular, not just a sale. That feeling is what gets people to drive past three other shops just to go to theirs.
